NTPC will conduct feasibility studies for nuclear power projects in various states, including Uttar Pradesh. The company aims to achieve 30 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047 to support India's energy diversification strategy. Feasibility studies have already identified potential sites in Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha, which will aid in planning. Collaboration with global energy firms is being explored to develop large pressurized water reactor projects in India. View More

New Delhi: State-owned NTPC plans to initiate feasibility studies in more states, including Uttar Pradesh, for proposed nuclear power projects as part of its drive to expand non-fossil fuel energy capacity to at least 2 GW by 2032, according to a senior official. As part of its energy diversification strategy, NTPC, which has five decades of experience in power generation, is targeting to set up 30 GW of nuclear projects in the country to contribute to the government's ambitious 100 GW nuclear capacity target by 2047. The company has completed feasibility studies in Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha, and now it will start looking for locations in more states for nuclear projects, the official told PTI. Sharing details of the finalised locations, he said that as per the feasibility study, Banka in Bihar, Basai in Madhya Pradesh and Nabarangpur in Odisha have been identified as potential sites for the nuclear projects. "More states will be explored as the vision is 30 GW nuclear capacity by 2047. Of course, Uttar Pradesh is on our list along with more states. We will conduct feasibility studies soon," the official said the company's plan is to set up an average project having 1,400 MW with two units of 700 MW each. Live Events As part of the process, feasibility study for a nuclear project is submitted to the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). The Standing Site Selection Committee reviews the proposal, and if found technically feasible, puts it to the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) for further processing. Industry estimates suggest that to set up a nuclear power capacity of 1 gigawatt, typically an investment of Rs 15,000-20,000 crore is required, and the timeframe could be at least three years from concept to commissioning. Five litres of water is needed to produce 1 unit of nuclear power. Land requirement depends on the size of the project, with a 1-square-kilometre exclusion zone. Among other inputs, continuous water supply is a key requirement for a nuclear project. For technology, NTPC is also exploring collaborations with global energy players such as US-based Westinghouse, Rosatom of Russia and French company EDF to explore collaboration on deploying large pressurised water reactor (PWR) projects in India, the official said. The Central Electricity Authority (CEA), a body that advises the Centre on matters related to the national electricity policy, has estimated that an investment worth Rs 15 lakh crore will be required to scale up the country's nuclear capacity target to 100 GW by adding around 91 GW to the current 8.8 GW. NTPC, which began power generation through thermal power, has steadily expanded and diversified into new energy sources, spanning coal, gas/liquid fuel, hydro and solar power. With over 91,000 megawatts (MW) of installed capacity, NTPC is India's largest energy generating company catering to the country's one-fourth electricity demand alone. .Pbanner{display:flex;justify-content:space-between;align-items:center;background-color:#ec1c40;margin-top:20px;padding:5px 10px;border-radius:4px;color:#fff;line-height:10px;width: 100%;box-sizing: border-box} .Pbannertext{display:flex;align-items:center;font-size:16px;font-weight:600;font-family:'Montserrat';} .Pbannertext img{height:20px;margin:0 6px} .Pbannerbutton a{display:flex;align-items:center;background-color:#fff;color:#ec1c40;text-decoration:none;font-weight:600;padding:4px 8px;border-radius:6px;font-size:15px;font-family:'Montserrat';} .Pbannerbutton img{height:20px;margin-right:6px} .Pbannerbutton a:hover{background-color:#f7f7f7} Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now! China's dominance in solar panel production, controlling approximately 90%, poses risks to the global transition towards renewable energy and its supply chains. The International Energy Agency points out China's crucial role in providing clean energy technology and rare earth materials. Sumant Sinha at ReNew Energy Global stresses the urgency for nations to broaden their supply chains. View More

The world’s overwhelming dependence on China for critical solar, wind and battery components poses a risk to the global energy transition by leaving supply chains vulnerable to disruption, according to the chief of a top Indian renewables company. China manufactures almost 90% of the world’s solar panels, with its dominance extending deep into the supply chains for batteries and other critical technologies, Sumant Sinha , chief executive officer of Nasdaq-listed ReNew Energy Global Plc. Such concentration is not “healthy,” he added. “We should all find ways of getting around that” Sinha said at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi. “What worries me is that the rest of the world is not thinking along those lines right now.” China is the world’s leading supplier of clean energy equipment — including solar panels, wind turbine components and batteries — and accounts for 60% to 85% of global production capacity across multiple green energy supply chains, according to the International Energy Agency. It also dominates rare-earth processing, which is essential for magnets and battery components. The world needs to invest more than $2 trillion annually to move away from fossil fuels, according to BloombergNEF data, and China’s dominance could amplify concerns about supply-chain vulnerabilities as countries race to expand clean energy supplies to meet demand from artificial intelligence and industrial growth. Live Events India is moving faster than most countries to insulate itself from risks, Sinha said. The country is developing its own supply chain, though building a “relatively independent” ecosystem could take five to seven years, he added. “But we are going to get there.” .Pbanner{display:flex;justify-content:space-between;align-items:center;background-color:#ec1c40;margin-top:20px;padding:5px 10px;border-radius:4px;color:#fff;line-height:10px;width: 100%;box-sizing: border-box} .Pbannertext{display:flex;align-items:center;font-size:16px;font-weight:600;font-family:'Montserrat';} .Pbannertext img{height:20px;margin:0 6px} .Pbannerbutton a{display:flex;align-items:center;background-color:#fff;color:#ec1c40;text-decoration:none;font-weight:600;padding:4px 8px;border-radius:6px;font-size:15px;font-family:'Montserrat';} .Pbannerbutton img{height:20px;margin-right:6px} .Pbannerbutton a:hover{background-color:#f7f7f7} Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
